Want to find a good tool to check for copied work? Check out our thoughts on Copyscape – how easy it is to use, what it offers, how much it costs, and how well it works. Is it worth your time and money?

Plagiarism checking is more critical than ever.
As more content gets posted online, the risk of copying grows.
Plus, when AI mixes information from different places on the internet, this risk goes up even more.
(We’ll skip the talk about AI and copying for now!)
We’re focusing on a top choice for checking plagiarism: Copyscape. It stands out among digital marketers, writers, and editors, especially when compared to newer tools like Originality.ai. Copyscape has been trusted for 20 years.
Main Points (Quick Summary)
- Originality.ai beats Copyscape at spotting plagiarism all over the world.
- It does better when checking for copied work, with 88% success for Originality.ai against Copyscape’s 68.5%, when both are set to a 5% similarity limit.
- Originality.ai is much better at spotting when someone copies bits and pieces from others.
- When checking for small copied parts (only 15% similar), Originality.ai can find about 44% of them. Copyscape only spots about 9%.
- When looking for even smaller bits (5% similar), Originality.ai finds 65% while Copyscape finds 30%.
- Originality.ai does a great job at spotting when someone has copied but changed the words a bit.
- When we set the bar at catching 15% copied stuff, Originality.ai finds about 28% of it while another checker, Copyscape, only sees about 11%.
- If we make it tougher and only look for 5% copied content, Originality.ai spots around 35%, which is pretty much the same as what Copyscape finds.

Copyscape is a good tool that helps you understand why it thinks your writing is copied, which makes sense because it’s been popular for a long time.
But, there are some big problems with it, especially how it looks and works.
What’s Copyscape?
For a long time, people have used Copyscape to find plagiarism. It lets you pay as you use it and gives detailed information. This makes Copyscape very popular for anyone looking to spot plagiarism, especially if they publish online.
Why do people like using Copyscape to check for copying?
More and more people are using plagiarism checkers because we live in a digital world now. While many work hard to create original and special content, some might just take stuff from other places and pretend it’s theirs.
That’s where Copyscape comes in. It helps stop people from stealing others’ work and acting like it’s their own.

History of Copyscape
Copyscape began in 2004 as a simple tool to check for copied work. Not much has changed in it over the years.

Who Should Use Copyscape?
Copyscape is a tool that many people have been using for a long time. It’s really popular with these groups:
Content marketers
Marketers can make sure their work is unique with it, and freelancers can show it’s really theirs when they submit it.
Freelancers
Freelancers find Copyscape useful. It helps show their clients that their work is original, not copied from someone else.
Using Copyscape Right
First, buy a Copyscape Premium. Next, just copy your words, put them into the site, and see your score.
Here’s a simple show of how your results would pop up when your writing is all clear, taking this piece as an example:
The result is easy to see, but it’s hard to move around the user interface because the text bar is small.
Also, Copyscape has a good feature. If your text is really long, it makes you say yes to start the test. This way, you know it might cost more.
What happens when Copyscape finds copied content? We tried by putting in part of one of our blogs to see if Copyscape would notice it.
You can click on “Compare Text” to see where your content matches.
Copyscape points out the copied parts and shows the percentage of the text that is copied at the page’s top.
What’s the Price?
Copyscape has a free tool. But, it only finds very clear copying. You can also get Copyscape Premium.
You pay by the word. It checks for copying better.
The cost? 3 cents for up to 200 words. Then, 1 cent for every 100 words more.
Other choices besides Copyscape
Copyscape has been a big name in finding copied content for a while, but there are some solid other options to look at.
For a lot of people, Grammarly comes to mind. However, as our test shows, Originality.ai’s tool for checking plagiarism is also a great pick instead of the old-style setup Copyscape has.
Our Test on the Plagiarism Checker
We’ve talked a lot about what Copyscape can do and what it can’t. Now, it’s time to see how it does when we compare it to other new plagiarism checkers.
When we check any tool, we always make sure our tests are thorough, exact, and fair. In our latest study, we looked at how good some well-known plagiarism checkers are.
We checked Copyscape and Grammarly, and also looked at Originality.ai, which is our own special tool.
We looked at their main parts, outcomes, how users feel about it, costs, and how well they find copied content.
To compare them right, we picked a bunch of texts. They were all different – some were original, some were rewritten in other words, and some were copied.
Dataset
- We have 600 pieces of tex :
- Samples that have fewer than 2500 words each
- We need 200 samples from every kind of plagiarism listed
- In the dataset we picked, we find three kinds of copying that aren’t allowed. Here’s where they come from :
- Worldwide Copying :

Evaluation standards
We checked every tool with the same rules listed here:
- Sensitivity means how often the detector correctly spots plagiarism.
- Accuracy means how often the detector’s guesses are right.
- F1 Score is like a special score that mixes together how detailed and accurate detectors are, helping us see which one does the best job.
The limit
We looked at these tools when the match is 3%, 5%, or 15%.
Threshold means the set percent of how much content needs to match before it’s called copied.
For instance, at 15%, it means if more than 15% of a document’s content is the same as others, it might be seen as copied.
When set to 15%, the tool Originality does really well at finding copies worldwide, with a success of 86%.
First, when it comes to spotting mixed-up copied content, Originality is ahead. It does better than Copyscape about 44% of the time.
Next, finding words that are changed around to hide copying is tough. But, Originality finds these about 28% of the time when checking small parts. That’s better than most other tools.
Originality.ai and Copyscape Comparison
This piece looks closely at how Originality.ai’s tool for checking plagiarism stacks up against Copyscape.
We see how well each tool finds copied work, whether it’s copied word-for-word from anywhere in the world or changed up a bit with paraphrasing and patching together bits from different places.
///
You can see that Originality.ai’s tool for checking if work is copied has really improved how well we can find copied work, even more than the older tool, Copyscape, that people used to always go to for this.
This smart AI is really good at spotting when someone has changed the words around or mixed bits from different places to hide copying. It can catch sneaky copying that Copyscape might not notice.
Summary of outcomes
- Originality.ai is better than Copyscape at spotting copying. It finds 86% of copies when allowed a 15% match, compared to Copyscape’s 60.5%. And at a tighter 5% match, Originality.ai spots 88%, while Copyscape catches 68.5%.
- Originality.ai finds that 27.62% of the text is unique when we only accept 15% of matching content, which is more effective than Copyscape’s detection of 10.5% uniqueness. However, when the acceptable match is lowered to 5%, both tools show nearly the same results, with Originality.ai at 34.7% and Copyscape at 35%.
- PatchWork Cheating: Originality.ai does much better, catching 43.5% compared to just 8.5% when we allow a little copying (up to 15%). And it finds 65% against 30% when we’re really strict, allowing only 5% to be copied.
