At the moment, it’s advisable to continue using ChatGPT instead of opting for Grok. ChatGPT, an OpenAI chatbot, excels in tasks like creating text, images, and code. Meanwhile, Grok, an AI tool available on X (previously Twitter), doesn’t offer enough advantages to make it a better choice.
Grok’s open-source announcement
Elon Musk’s X has revealed that Grok’s tech will be open-sourced. Developers can access the code on GitHub. More info about the model is available at x.ai.
- The Base model learned from a big pool of text but hasn’t been tweaked for specific jobs.
- A Mixture-of-Experts model with 314 billion parameters uses 25% of its weights for each token.
- A specialized training approach was developed by xAI in October 2023, utilizing a unique setup built on JAX and Rust from the ground up.
Elon Musk’s actions often make headlines, and this situation is no exception. He’s considering open-sourcing Grok partly because he’s suing OpenAI. Musk’s condition to drop the lawsuit is that OpenAI must change its name to ClosedAI, as he disapproves of them not being truly open-source.
How to Access Grok
To get Grok, you must enroll in X Premium Plus. It’s probably only available in some areas, like the U.S.A., right now.
You can join through your X account or by visiting X.AI directly.
Make sure you choose the Premium+ option and are in the U.S.A. After signing up, your X profile should show a Grok tab on the left side.
Elon Musk said that if you have over 5,000 verified followers on X, you’ll receive Premium+ for free, giving you access to Grok.
Grok vs ChatGPT- Which is Better?
Comparing these tools is tricky since they’re quite different. ChatGPT can produce content on many topics, whereas Grok AI focuses on creating more current content with a humorous vibe. ChatGPT also makes images with Dalle-3 and has web search features that Grok AI doesn’t have, as Grok deals only with text and relies on data from the X platform.
Grok’s main perk is offering more current, real-time info, while ChatGPT often lacks the latest data. Still, I’d pick ChatGPT for most tasks because it’s way ahead. ChatGPT’s capabilities are vast, while Grok AI feels more restricted.
Learn More About Grok
Since Grok is pretty new, I figured it would be interesting to explore the AI tool further.
Regular Mode vs Fun Mode
Grok has two settings: Regular and Fun. Fun mode is supposed to be funnier, but honestly, I can’t tell the difference.
No chat history
It’s not possible to revisit previous conversations with Grok. However, you can share your chats on X. X (still odd to call it that!) requests you to confirm Grok’s output.
Grok vs Google Gemini
From my experience, Google Gemini currently offers more up-to-date information than ChatGPT. I’m gradually leaning towards using Google Gemini as it performs excellently in all my tests.
The way it integrates with other Google products is a significant advantage, though not many people mention this.
Grok, however, doesn’t quite meet expectations, even with its integrations. When I asked for a list of profiles on a specific topic, it just made up Twitter profiles. In contrast, if you request Google Gemini for YouTube videos on a particular subject, it usually succeeds.
Using AI content online
When you use tools like Grok to publish AI content online, you need to know about several issues.
Here are the main ones:
- AI tools sometimes make mistakes and produce incorrect information.
- Uninspired, dull content.
- Scholarly honesty
When an AI tool makes something up, it’s called hallucinating. This happens because the tool uses a model that predicts the next word. The tools aren’t aware of what’s true or false. They are making educated guesses based on their training data.
Students might use AI tools to do their homework. This can ruin the point of schoolwork and practicing important skills like writing.
That’s why we’ve developed an AI content detector at Winston AI. It catches AI-generated content with 99.98% accuracy.
